Job Overview
- The key purpose of this role is to manage and co-ordinate the Packaging Department in order to achieve the required standard of product quality and output in the most efficient and effective manner.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Manage plant, process and systems
- Translates and implements packaging, manufacturing and business strategies across the packaging hall.
- Ensure that all team members are fully conversant with the VPO.
- Develop and drive implementation plans to progress our VPO Principles / agreed VPO Pillar Blocks in order to sustain results.
- Ensures conformance to Plant and Packaging specifications and standards.
- Drives maintenance integrity to maximise equipment availability and reliability while ensuring engineering integrity and close partnership with the Maintenance Manager.
- Optimises process capability.
- Leads packaging projects as required.
- Coordinate packaging logistics, shift patterns and run strategies to maximise GLY, FTE productivity and overall supply reliability.
- Packaging Productivity.
- Proactively control fixed and variable costs.
- Minimise waste.
- Manage, measure and monitor packaging effectiveness through: Packaging efficiency, Trade quality, Raw material usage rate, Waste through beer loss
- IQMS parameters.
- Production costs per Hl to global benchmarks.
- Maintenance cost per Hl to global benchmarks.
- Responsible for the overall reliability of the packaging hall.
Team Leadership:
- Lead the packaging team in a manner that engenders ownership, empowerment and team interaction.
- Lead the development of the packaging team’s goals and ensure these are communicated and understood by team members.
- Conduct regular Packaging team goal review sessions and conduct regular one-on-one and performance reviews.
- Ensure training needs analyses are conducted and training plans are developed for team members.
- Ensure appropriate competencies are developed in the team, and ensure cross-skilling occurs within the packaging team.
Safety and Housekeeping:
- Ensure that the packaging team apply proper safety and housekeeping procedures, and adheres to all legal requirements when carrying out their tasks
- Ensure implementation of the appropriate SAB and legislative policies (such as the OSH Act) on safety and housekeeping
- Ensure that safety and housekeeping receive the appropriate focus through regular checks and safety audits
- Where unsafe work practices have been identified, the packaging manager is responsible for correcting them
- Ensures adherence to PPE policy
- General production housekeeping
- Safe maintenance practices are audited
- Ensure adherence to the VPO safety pillar in the packaging department with regular coaching and OWD’s done
- Ensures adherence to SHE system requirements
- Drive Safety and legal compliance in the Packaging Hall.
Job Requirements
- BSc Engineering or equivalent Engineering degree
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Packaging Management with deep expertise in asset management
- Experience in managing and running a high-speed packaging line would be highly advantageous
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in managing people.
- Demonstrated experience in driving commercial decisions in a packaging hall (financial, operational, and people)
- Demonstrated experience in leading VPO in a Brewery environment.
Key Attributes and Competencies:
- A superior performance track record indicating a disciplined work ethic with passion for maintaining quality
- Demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation, specifically health and safety and labour legislation
- Proven experience in managing Industrial Relations within the workforce
- Managing people’s ability as well as their ability to drive performance
- Leadership ability (ability to lead the packaging hall)
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to develop and control budgets
- Ability to implement appropriate HR processes to manage, motivate and develop people
- Ability to manage complex projects of a significant amount
- Ability to facilitate problem-solving in a team forum
- High level of resilience and ability to operate in a high-pressure environment.
