Job Position: Junior Linux Kernel Engineer – Ubuntu

Location: Lagos (Remote)

Job Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team
  2. Learn from senior mentors to demystify the inner workings of the Linux kernel and how it is distributed
  3. Work closely with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturer delivery teams on bleeding-edge platforms
  4. Diagnose and resolve issues in the kernel reported by customers, the community, and discovered by your own rigorous testing
  5. Take personal responsibility for the delivery of various flavours of the Ubuntu Linux kernel
  6. Improve tooling and automation for the delivery and testing of Ubuntu Linux kernels
  7. Submit, review, and apply kernel patches, working with both internal and external upstream maintainers

Job Requirement

  1. Well-organised and motivated self-starter able to thrive in a remote work environment
  2. Professional manner with colleagues, business partners, and the open-source community
  3. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal
  4. Programming experience in C and/or Rust
  5. Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git
  6. Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals
  7. Ability to travel twice a year for company events of up to two weeks in length

Skills & Competencies

  1. Interest and experience in Rust
  2. Python and Bash scripting ability
  3. Prior experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging
  4. Demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging
  5. Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and other low-level system engineering.
