African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King’s College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.

The African Medical Centre of Excellence will be implemented in four phases over six-year period, starting with a 170-bed specialist hospital before expanding to a 500-bed facility. The center will have the potential to provide services to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from neighboring West African countries within its first five years of operation.

The clinical areas the center will specialize in Cardiology, Haematology and Oncology. A range of businesses providing relevant health support will support this facility and provide commercial services to its patients and staff, thus creating a healthcare ecosystem sustainably designed to deliver long-term value to its community and region.

This is an outstanding initiative and creates a unique opportunity to be involved in the opening chapter of this exciting project that is set to make a decisive impact on non-communicable disease care across Nigeria and West Africa. Job Position: Electrical Manager

Job Location: Abuja

Job Summary

  • As the Electrical Manager the place holder will be responsible for supervising the electrical section and lead the team in the management, maintenance, repair and installation of electrical equipment to achieve the operational requirements of the relevant standards as well as provide utmost customer satisfactions.
  • You would be in charge of managing the supply, installation, and design of electrical systems in your capacity as an electrical manager. On a daily basis, you would create schedules, allot time, resources, and funds, and oversee personnel to guarantee that work is finished punctually and to a high standard favourable for the AMCE.
  • The ideal candidate will have extensive experience leading and managing an electrical team who will also be driving growth within an organisation. You will be an assured leader that is able to take create and maintain positive working relationships with senior management and the wider organisation. The post holder will be able to demonstrate their electrical skills in a strategic manner, therefore, it is essential that the ideal candidate has a wealth of electrical engineering knowledge gained through their past experiences, to be able to display those skills

Reporting & Accountable to: Director of Estates and Facilities

Job Responsibilities

Leadership:

  1. Overall responsibility for the effective management of the following equipment/systems at the Hospital
  2. Power Supply Installations (Mains RMU, Transformers, Switchgear, etc.)
  3. Power Distribution facilities (Switchgear, Bus bars, Cables, Distribution Boards etc.)
  4. Power Supply Backup installations (Generating Sets, UPS Systems, Inverters, etc.)
  5. Substation equipment (Switchgears, relays etc.)
  6. Fire Alarm systems
  7. Lighting Systems (external/internal, Street Lighting etc.)
  8. Domestic Wiring Installations
  9. Provide strategic leadership and expertise on all procurement-related activities across the organisation.

Strategic Development:

  1. Identify any potential risks and opportunities in the electrical process and implement strategies to negate those risks or capitalize on opportunities
  2. Ensure electrical processes and activities are carried out ensuring that the relevant compliance processes have been taken into account
  3. To assist with the budget / resources allocations making sure that any electrical activities carried out fall in line with those set
  4. Provide support in the coordination of activities related to the project planning and implementation of new electrical installations in the overall project scope
  5. Monitor and ensure effective supply and distribution of power across the Hospital
  6. Undertake routine Inspection of all electrical installations (Electrical Panels, Transformers Generating Sets, Lighting, Car Park & Street Lighting)
  7. Monitor and Supervise Maintenance Contracts
  8. Issue works orders and monitor related works (Works orders to contractors to carry out maintenance works etc.)
  9. Prepare Sectional Monthly Reports

Governance:

  1. To ensure that all equipment comply with the statutory regulations that are in place
  2. Ensure compliance of subordinates to departmental policies, procedures, and manuals
  3. Equipment operated on breach of set regulations
  4. Accidents caused due to breach in set standards
  5. Number of sanctions on quality of electrical facilities

Other Duties:

  1. Ensure maintenance procedures and practices required for the effective and efficient functioning of all electrical installations are prepared and judiciously adhered to
  2. Ensure the efficient operation of all electrical equipment and facilities installed at the Hospital
  3. Provide technical support in the preparation of project scope, design, and technical specifications in consultation with the projects section
  4. Monitor and direct to ensure the execution of the appropriate maintenance works (Preventive, Corrective etc.)

Equality and Diversity:

  • Act as lead for Equality & Diversity in the Electrical department to ensure the development and effective implementation of a strategy, set of policies, procedures and monitoring and control systems are in place

  1. Work with HR to undertake recruitment, retention, performance management and development of staff in the team
  2. Work with the Recruitment Manager to establish connections with appropriate local, international and online communities to nurture a pipeline of talent to support the growth of the company
  3. Responsible for development of high potential employees, providing a structured approach to mentoring and developing critical talent at all levels of management

Communications And Working Relationships:

  1. Ability to interpret data and translate it towards the stakeholders and wider teams
  2. Assist the projects department in the review of designs (i.e. drawings and technical specifications) prepared by consultants and/or contractors
  3. Carry out supervision/monitoring of installation works to ensure that works are carried out according to good workmanship and specifications
  4. Coordinate and facilitate consultation with stakeholders to define business and systems requirements for new electrical implementations
  5. Establish credibility throughout the organisation and set an example as a proactive senior leader and change agent who earns respect by demonstrating a sound understanding of electrical objectives and goals
  6. Collaborate with the senior members to determine short and long-term needs of the Electrical department

Line Management

  1. Develop and maintain the department with the appropriate mix of business knowledge and technical skills required to achieve strategic objectives and ensure the core functions are reliable, stable and efficient
  2. Provide strong leadership to develop, coach and ensure a high-performing team
  3. Establish the department goals, objectives and operating procedures

Organizational Responsibilities:

  1. Work with the senior management team to horizon scan for new technology or sector-related improvements.
  2. Provide solutions and services to the business that retain and increase a competitive advantage within the sector

Confidentiality

  • The post holder must be aware that Confidential Information and data to which the post holder will have knowledge and access to in the course of their employment with the AMCE is to be kept confidential, and this confidentiality is a condition of employment. The duty to maintain confidentiality continues even when the post holder is no longer employed.
  • This information is not to be shared with anyone outside of the AMCE under any circumstances, except to the extent necessary to fulfil any duties and responsibilities required within the role. Furthermore, upon termination with the AMCE Abuja, the post holder will return to the AMCE all confidential information held.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum of first degree in Electrical Engineering or any related course
  • Recent continuation of professional development

Desirable

  • Master’s qualification in a related field is desirable
  • Education/qualifications/certifications, experience and expertise for these roles will cut across different countries or regions.
  • Member International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards
  • Building Electrical Design (BOQ preparation) and Maintenance
  • Working knowledge of power substation systems

  • Breakdown education, and certification requirements that would provide Kings Commercial Services with an adequate understanding of the level and depth of experience required

Experience

  • In Minimum of 10 years’ experience of operations and maintenance in electrical engineering at hospitals with at least 5 years’ experience in a managerial role
  • Proven experience in Electrical leadership with a track record of achieving exceptional results
  • Confident communicator that is able to articulate their findings in a clear and concise manner
  • The ability to work independently as well as lead a team
  • Experience developing Electrical processes, strategies and activities
