Job Description

  1. We are looking for a confident, creative, collaborative, and proactive Executive Director to join our team and work alongside staff and volunteers. We have always put leadership and movement building at the heart of our work, and this position will deliver on those ambitions and the targets set in our 2022–25 strategy.
  2. Using a feminist, collaborative, and anti-oppressive approach, the Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership, overall management, and operations of STER according to the strategic direction and policies of STER. The Executive Director leads and influences the organisation toward positive growth, and designs, updates, and directs strategies that support and enhance the organisation’s operations. STER is looking to expand its programming into other African countries, and is keen on having a leader that has clear strategies on how to get us there!
  3. The Executive Director is accountable to and reports to STER’s Global Director and Advisory Board through reports and the biannual Advisory Board meetings. The Executive Director’s primary role is to advance the organisation’s vision and collaborate with the Board to create workplace cultures at STER that promote equity, justice, collaboration, innovation, respect, and empowerment, with the core belief that a woman is creative, resourceful, and whole.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Recruit personnel (staff, interns and volunteers) to steer the organisation toward growth and sustainability.
  2. Review, expand, plan and execute the STER’s strategy, programs and development fund.
  3. Develop, manage and sustain grant opportunities and other fundraising initiatives towards STER’s social enterprise model.
  4. Strategically provide professional leadership and management of the day-to-day operations and programs.
  5. Oversee budget and financial statements and expenditures, and yearly financial audits.
  6. Ensure regular timely and accurate donor reports and other publications on media platforms, including the website.
  7. Engage with communities of best practice, sharing it with our team and keeping our work up to date on new learning.
  8. Engage with policy, campaigns and conversations through events and meetings, as well as submissions to consultations.
  9. Translate STER’s frontline experience into policy briefs to influence laws and debates around sexual and gender-based violence and tech-facilitated abuse.
  10. Research and publish resources and thought-leadership that benefits the VAWG sector, technologists and policymakers.
  11. Formalize partnerships with national, regional and global organisations that advance gender equity, women’s rights and policies and research institutes.
  12. Work in close communication with the Advisory Board and assist in the preparation of the board and annual general meetings.
  13. Ensure regulatory compliance to all government requirements for civil society organisations and social enterprises in Nigeria and across Africa.
  14. Oversee the regular update and amplification of digital platforms to foster service provision and awareness-raising initiatives on the organisation’s programs and impact.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Gender Studies, Research, Social Services, Social Sciences, Business Development, International Relations or related discipline.
  • 5-7+ years of experience in a senior management leadership role in a non-profit, youth-led organisation or social enterprise with proven planning, implementation and coordination skills.
  • Extensive experience in fundraising, research and donor management.
  • Demonstrated mentorship and leadership ability in a manner which supports the agency’s philosophy of leadership and growth of staff and programs.
  • Understanding of local and regional contexts on legal frameworks, committees and strategies on gender equity, research and women’s rights programming.
  • Fluency in English, a major local language and any other UN-recognised language is a plus.
  • Ability to effectively use MS Office packages, G-Suites and other collaborative tools such as Slack, Trello and monday.com.

  1. Knowledge, understanding and commitment to principles of sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response, anti-oppression, equity and inclusion; able to build bridges and weave these principles into all aspects of the organisation, including its culture and policies/processes.
  2. Proven track record in program management, research, donor relations and innovations.
  3. A leader that leads with a participatory management style and acts as a role model for the team and creates a high-performance workplace reflective of STER’s mission, vision and values.
  4. A relationship builder that develops and maintains positive working relationships with community organisations (actively seeking to engage with diverse communities), survivors, civil society organisations, donors, governments, advisory board and other stakeholders.
  5. A results-oriented leader with the ability to clearly and fairly set expectations, negotiate, and hold self and others accountable with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. Skilled and experienced in establishing productive relationships with the board, and presenting complex data in a succinct and effective manner for informed decision-making.
  7. A strategic critical thinker that also has strong operational skills, to both guide the organization and ensures that day-to-day management of human resources, accounting, finance, risk management, quality, and governance are effectively managed.
  8. A change agent, who is successfully able to support a growing organization.
  9. Creating and delivering on a strategy to reach out and partner with other non-profit actors
