Job Description

  • Are you a great freelance writer looking for a long-term gig? We are seeking a Journalist to cover classifieds and marketplaces in Nigeria. The reporter will cover Nigeria and the surrounding region.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Learn, understand and become an expert in classifieds and marketplaces across Nigeria and the surrounding region.
  2. Build a network of contacts and sources to cover the industry. Connect with CEOs, comms departments and industry insiders to deliver the strongest content.
  3. Write short news items on day-to-day industry headlines on WordPress for AIMGroup.com. Add intelligence, opinion and expert perspective.
  4. Work on in-depth, long-form articles that include desktop research, interviews and charts.

Job Requirements

  1. Someone who is reliable, dependable, willing to learn and is a pleasure to work with.
  2. Writers who are absolutely proficient in English. (If it’s your second language, or fourth, that’s great, but your English writing should be flawless.)
  3. Someone who will develop a beat, whether it’s geographic or vertical-specific (recruitment, real estate or automotive), and consistently build relationships with sources.
  4. Someone with a global perspective. Just because you’re covering Nigeria doesn’t mean your sources have to be there. They can be anywhere, and should be.
  5. Great reporting and interviewing skills, with an ability to track down people and get them to talk.
  6. Someone who’s aggressive about finding new sources, whether they are individuals, companies or data, and working with them to develop great reports.

What We Offer

  1. A company with a 25-year track record of stability.
  2. A great group of team members, literally around the world, who work together on our publications, our consulting and our conferences.
  3. Decent pay. Always. On time. In 24 years-plus, we’ve never missed a payroll or paid late. You submit your invoices, you get paid. (For freelancers, that’s like gold.)
  4. Interesting work in a somewhat off-the-beaten-path, b-to-b environment.
  5. Work from home (WFH) with extreme flexibility.
  6. Payment per article or in some cases payment on retainer.
  7. We think long-term. Some of our writers have been with us for 10 years or more. Our managing director joined us as a writer nearly 20 years ago. It’ll take you at least three months to get proficient in your domain, and a year until you can grow into one of our rock stars. But we’re patient, and if you work with us we’ll work with you.
  8. The strongest candidates will be required to complete a paid trial to ask to determine their suitability.
