Job Position: Head of Credit

Job Description
- We are looking for a competent and experienced professional to lead our credit department.
- The Head of Credit will be responsible for setting credit strategy, overseeing the full credit process, managing risk, and ensuring sustainable portfolio growth.
- The ideal candidate is someone who understands the realities of lending in a financial institution environment balancing sound credit judgment with a deep understanding of the financial challenges faced by our clients.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and lead the execution of the financial institution’s overall credit strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals and regulatory expectations.
- Design, implement, and regularly review credit policies, risk frameworks, and standard operating procedures to guide credit operations across all units.
- Oversee the full credit cycle, including customer assessment, loan approval, disbursement, monitoring, restructuring, and recovery.
- Track portfolio performance indicators such as PAR (Portfolio at Risk), NPLs (Non-Performing Loans), and risk exposures. Provide timely analysis and interventions where necessary.
- Ensure that all credit practices comply with CBN regulations and internal risk policies. Engage with auditors and regulators during reviews and examinations.
- Lead, coach, and support the credit team. Promote a culture of accountability, responsiveness, and professionalism.
- Work with product and marketing teams to develop or refine loan products that are commercially viable and client-friendly.
- Prepare regular reports for senior management and the board on credit performance, trends, emerging risks, and areas for improvement.
- Liaise with other departments—Operations, Finance, Legal, and IT—to ensure a smooth and coordinated credit process.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or related field.
- Master’s degree (MBA or related) is an advantage.
- Professional certifications such as CIBN, Certified Credit Professional (CCP), RIMAN, or ICAN/ACCA are preferred and will be an added advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in credit or risk management, preferably in a Financial institution or retail Financial institution environment.
- At least 3 years in a leadership or senior management position.
- Demonstrated experience in credit operations, risk analysis, collections, and portfolio management.
- Proven track record of reducing loan defaults and improving credit systems.
