Job Description

  • A legal officer / Company Secretary is responsible for providing legal advice and support to the company on various maritime-related matters.
  • The role requires a deep understanding of maritime law, international trade law, and shipping regulations.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Advising on legal issues arising from the operation of ships, such as contracts of affreightment, charter parties, bills of lading, and marine insurance policies.
  2. Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating shipping contracts, such as shipbuilding contracts, ship chartering agreements, and marine service contracts.
  3. Providing advice on maritime disputes, including those related to cargo claims, ship collisions, marine pollution, and other maritime-related accidents.
  4. Representing the company in legal proceedings, such as arbitrations, mediations, and court cases.
  5. Keeping up to date with changes to international and national maritime laws and regulations and providing guidance to the company on their implications.
  6. Advising on the formation, registration, and operation of ship-owning companies and the purchase and sale of ships and shipping assets.
  7. Providing support on compliance with environmental laws and regulations, including those relating to the prevention of marine pollution and the disposal of waste from ships.

Job Requirements

  1. A Law Degree
  2. Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a lawyer, with a focus on maritime law, international trade law, or a related field.
  3. Knowledge of maritime law
  4. Strong analytical skills
  5. Communication and negotiation skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills
  6. Adaptability and flexibility
  7. Familiarity with the shipping industry: Knowledge of the shipping industry, including shipping practices, customs, and regulations, is highly desirable.
