Job Position: Microbiologist

Job Summary

Our client is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Microbiologist to join our laboratory team in Port Harcourt. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting microbiological analyses of water, environmental, food, and petroleum-related samples to ensure they meet safety and regulatory standards.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Perform microbiological testing on a wide range of samples including water, effluents, soil, and product surfaces.
  2. Identify, isolate, and quantify microbial contaminants using appropriate techniques (e.g., culture, staining, microscopy, biochemical testing).
  3. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, incubators, laminar flow hoods, and colony counters.
  4. Prepare culture media and ensure proper sterilization and storage procedures are followed.
  5. Record, analyze, and report findings accurately and timely in line with standard operating procedures and client requirements.
  6. Maintain and update laboratory records, data sheets, and logbooks following regulatory standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025).
  7. Assist in method development and validation for new microbiological testing procedures.
  8. Adhere strictly to laboratory safety, hygiene, and quality control protocols.
  9. Participate in internal audits, proficiency testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Job Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, or related life sciences.
  2. 1–3 years experience in a microbiology or environmental laboratory (industrial experience preferred).
  3. Strong understanding of microbiological techniques and standards (e.g., APHA, ISO, ASTM methods).
  4. Familiarity with quality systems and documentation, especially ISO 17025.
  5. Proficiency in lab equipment handling and microbial identification.
  6. Excellent observational, analytical, and reporting skills.
  7. Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
