Job Position: Cost Accountant
Location: Abuja (FCT)

Job Summary

  1. The Cost Accountant is responsible for developing and maintaining cost accounting procedures, analysing and reporting on cost variances, identifying opportunities for cost reduction, and supporting the company’s financial reporting and budgeting processes.
  2. The Cost Accountant will work closely with the Finance Manager and other cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and timely cost information is available for decision-making.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Develop cost standards for materials and labour, and analyse and report on cost variances, investigating significant variances.
  2. Identify opportunities for cost reduction and process improvements to optimise the company’s construction operations.
  3. Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies, including the application of IFRS.
  4. Support new construction project launches with cost analysis and recommendations to assist in pricing decisions and proposals.
  5. Develop and maintain cost accounting procedures and documentation, including the application of overhead, labour, and raw materials to construction inventory.
  6. Provide cost information for pricing decisions and proposals, and assist in the preparation of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts.
  7. Recommend cost accounting systems and work with the Finance Manager to optimise the use of ERP systems to implement and maintain processes.
  8. Work with leadership to assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining construction records, and account for physical inventory in conjunction with operations staff.
  9. Assist the Finance Manager in developing specific finance data flows or reporting to ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements by IFRS.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, with a minimum of 3-5 years of relevant cost accounting experience in the construction industry.
  2. Professional certification, such as ICAN, ANAN, ACCA, is preferred.
  3. Experience with standard inventory costing with bill of materials for construction materials, and product costing/profitability analysis.
  4. Proficiency in the application of IFRS and an understanding of internal controls in the construction industry.
  5. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other relevant construction accounting software.
  6. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and make strategic recommendations.
  7. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional construction teams.
